Misty Isle

Misty Isle was a famous ring-netter on the west coast of Scotland working out of Broadford, Skye, for the Macrae family for 40 years. She had a great reputation for sea-worthiness, often sailing across the wild Minch to market her catch of fresh herring when other boats took hshelter in port.

This type of vessel was once common in every Scottish port and fishing village up and down the coastline. Ring-netters had very low bulwarks to allow easy handling of the nets over the sides, and clear decks with virtually no machinery. Modern vessels are much bulkier, and Misty's diesel engine used only 2 to 3 gallons per hour due to the fine underwater shape of the hull. The boat is currently being restored to her original style.
