Pevensey Castle

The Castle has one of the most complete Roman Walls in England, and you can see where William the Conqueror came ashore. Originally a Roman fortress, the castle has had military importance from the Dark ages to World War II.

During the four centuries after William the Conqueror landed here, it was attacked and besieged many times. Even as late as 1940 the castle was made ready to resist the enemy and World War II gun emplacements and pill boxes stand among the ancient castle walls.

You can explore the dungeons and the roman walls, and there's a free audio tour, when you can learn more about the castle and its 2000 year history - its Roman origins, its part in 1066, and in World War II.
