Forest Way The Forest Way follows a former railway track and the cycling takes you along a flat, tree-lined route as it winds through peaceful, historic countryside. There are small fields and scattered farmsteads among the accompanying wooded rolling hills for mile after mile. The line was opened in 1866, and though becoming a busy commuter line, it eventually fell under the axe of the Beeching cuts in 1966. Ironically, Dr Beeching lived nearby in Forest Row village and regularly traveled up to London on the line when Chairman of British Rail. One interesting aspect to note is the number of alder and willow trees along the route - this is because you are in a floodplain of the River Medway and these trees like wet ground - large areas to either side of of the Park can be flooded for weeks at a time. And look out for the occasional heron too. |
