Meldon Viaduct

The Viaduct spans the West Okement Valley at the point where the track makes its way around the north-western edge of Dartmoor.

The first viaduct was erected in 1874 to carry the single track Bridestowe and Lydford line of the Devon and Cornwall Railway across the West Okement river valley. In 1927, as a result of concerns over the combined effects of loads from trains travelling around the curve, a speed limit of 20mph was imposed, although in 1944 during the war, heavier trains were permitted to cross. The latest significant change to the viaduct occured in 1990 when the rails across the viaduct were lifted.

There are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside from this historic structure, and the Devon C2C carries you across the viaduct 150 feet above the ground. The viaduct is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and a great viewpoint for cyclists on the route.
