Airdrie - Bathgate Railway Path This is the core central section of the Clyde to the Forth cycle route, and offers a 15 mile path across Scotland's central plateau. Originally built in the 1950's, the Airdrie to Bathgate Junction Railway carried coal, ironstone and limestone to the numerous works in the Monkland District. Closed to passengers in 1956, and to freight in the mid-1980's, the railway still gives the cyclist the opportunity to feel what this part of Scotland might have been like in its heyday. All along the route there are the remains of the old industries; quarries, coal mines and mining villages. But there are pastoral scenes and extensive views too and the route is accompanied by a sculpture trail which closely identifies with the communities it passes through. |
