Rhondda Heritage Park Make a pit stop at Rhondda Heritage Park and hold tight for the 2 minute ride to the pit bottom. With your helmet on you can ride the cage to the 'Pit Bottom', take a few seconds to adjust to the conditions, and suddenly be transported back to the Lewis Merthyr Colliery of the 1950's. Accompanied by tour guides - all ex-miners - you explore the the underground workings and experience the sights and sounds and smells of a 1950's pit. You can touch the machinery, hear the effects as explosives are detonated, the changing atmospheric conditions and humidity, and at the end of the shift there's a simulated ride which hurtles you through dark and twisting tunnels and back to the surface. There are many other attractions on the surface, including a Period Village Street and audio visual presentations which take you through the culture and character of the Rhondda as seen through the eyes of three generations of a mining family.
