Dounreay Visitor Centre The Dounreay Restoration Plan is said to be the most comprehensive blueprint for the restoration of a major nuclear site in the world. In the Centre you can clearly see the spherical building of the Dounreay fast breeder reactor included in the changes. The development of fast reactor technology was developed here, and now the pioneering is the decommissioning of the nuclear research site. The site was opened in 1955 and three reactors were built over the next 20 years - all are now closed. The restoration plan integrates the many separate activities of the restoration, fuel treatment, waste management and land remediation, and the major hazards will have been removed by 2025. The decommissioning will be completed in 50 - 60 years with £4 billion being spent on making it safe. The technical challenges include decommissioning of the Fast Reactor, fuel plants and the retrieval of radioactive wastes from the Waste Shaft and Silo. The Visitor Centre tells the story of Dounreay from the past, present and looking into the future showing the Dounreay site restoration plans, and guided bus tours of the site are available.
