Just off the city centre of York, the River Ouse joins the White Rose route and it's a cycle along the river before a crossing onto the flat landscapes of the Vale of York.
The origin of the cycle route's name, the White Rose, comes from the adoption of a white rose as the badge of the House of York during the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485) when the rival houses of York and Lancaster contested the crown of England, the House of Lancaster choosing the red rose.
