Local cyclists are often pleased to talk to wandering cyclists with loaded panniers. And you are constantly reminded on this ride across the narrowest of England's crossing points that industry is never far away. The industrial chimneys are always there whether it's at Liverpool, Selby or Hull. Right along the Trail it's inevitable that heavy industry shares the land with the cycle trail, farms, rivers, canals and cities. These smoking chimneys will disappear one day but right now they are background companions along the length of the Trail.
