Sunflowers and heliotropism. Not the first time we've seen them and worth a mention as they cheer you up and always seem to be intelligently facing away from the prevailing wind. Or so it seems.

Just past Hemingbrough and its pretty12th century church there's a field of them. At bud stage over the course of the day they move to track the sun from east to west and at night return to an eastward direction. When fully grown after the blooming stage the stem has frozen and typically it's in an eastward direction. And in the UK this means they face away from the prevailing wind. It's heliotropism, and why they face eastwards, like cyclists, along the Trans Pennine Trail.
