The starting point, actually. For the next generation too. From Southport the route travels south by the Irish Sea for 5 miles before the change eastward and ultimately Hornsea, 200 miles away. It's a long way too if you want the traditional touching of the bike's wheel in the water and then the promenade introduces you to the Trans Pennine Cycleway.
From the promenade starting point it's off on another journey across England. With the debris of floods to come, there's the history of coal mining and its transportation along the railway lines, the River Mersey and its Estuary, canals, reservoirs and waterfalls, cycling along on the top of a dyke, down a forgotten disused airstrip, and snatches of conversation with locals along the length of the Trail.
