Conversation Pieces, South Shields

Locally known as 'the Little Beach',  Littlehaven Beach lies between the two River Tyne piers. The unusual sculptures to the northern side of the beach is 'Conservation Piece'. The 22 life size figures converse with each other, with those that come to meet them, and in turn become the subject of conversation.

The Spanish sculptore Juan Munoz was initially reluctant to site his work here but once upon the beach between the two Tyne piers which reach out across the estuary he decided to place his work here. Each figure is depicted in a different pose, listening, leaning or talking. People just idling the time away fits well.
