Littlehaven Beach, South Shields.
The North and South piers here at the entrance to the River Tyne were completed in 1895 and made access to the Tyne after many shipwrecks much safer. The river has for thousands of years been the main artery for so many people as it cuts into north-east England and heads westwards. The Romans carried supplies for its soldiers on Hadrians Wall from here and the Norsemen used the river mouth for its strategic position as a port. Shipbuilding came, boats carried the coal from the north-east pits and now the Nissan cars leave for export overseas. The river and its estuary here at South Shields have altered little. Just the people, the buildings and bridges, the new marinas with their yachts and high rise flats along the riverbanks have changed.
