If you cover the Middlesborough section of the Three Rivers then try to take in the Transporter Bridge. This monolithic bridge once allowed tall ships to pass beneath and is the largest working bridge of its type in the world. Some 200 people - a sign of better times - or 6 motorcars can be carried across the Tees by the 'travelling car' which is suspended from the bridge - a giant winch in the Winding House does all the work as it pulls two cables of 545 metres and 227 metres.
It's Middlesbrough's most famous landmark and still in operation so try to take in this journey on a piece of living history. It's not definitely not cost effective so is unlikely to be around for much longer as a working bridge and it's less than a mile from the route and railway station in Middlesbrough so try the river crossing if you have time. It's a crazy mishmash of steel bars and winches quaintly attended by a bridge conductor asking for your fare.
