This adjacent railway to the old railway track led to the demise of the Hart - Haswell railway line. The newer railtrack headed straight down the coast to the busy ports of Middlesborough, Sunderland and Tyneside. The Hart - Haswell line was unable to compete, finally closing in 1980.
