Lower Buxton.
In 1840, the people who lived in Higher Buxton had to fetch all their water from springs and the River Wye in Lower Buxton. When a water supply was provided by the 6th Duke of Derbyshire the people of the area decided to dress the fountain to celebrate and thank the Duke. And that's how well-dressing came to be in Higher Buxton, and the festival has continued ever since.
