Striking out and up from Holmfirth of 'Last of the Summer Wine' fame. Like the other towns in the area, Holmfirth was once linked strongly to the textile industry. It has reinvented itself to some degree, partly due to the long running 'Last of the Summer Wine' TV show, but it's a pretty place too with narrow streets and meandering river.
These towns, including the next settlements of Meltham and Slaithwaite, are former mill towns, and in the 18th and 19th centuries the textile industry made this area a vibrant, and for some a prosperous and affluent place to live. Many of the mill buildings still dominate the valleys of the towns, but so many also stand empty. Times change though, and the canals and railway lines which played such a crucial role in the success of the mills have rejuvenated the area again, but this time for leisure and enjoyment.
