It's three underground miles from here to Woodhead Station at the other end of the tunnel. And underground it was for almost 150 years as the railways carried freight and passengers between Sheffield and Manchester - coal was the main form of freight as the coal faces of the Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire coal mines supplied the industries of Lancashire.
