You can find signatures on the walls of the lock - a kind of authorised graffiti, the markings of skilled builders who constructed the canal and its locks. This picture shows the height of the water ahead of the boat - the unlocking of the gates has to be done gradually as a sudden gush of water can overturn the long, but narrow, canal boat. Water can also be seen constantly leaking from the stonewalls of the locks but the leakage is minimal although the running and conservation of the the canal runs into millions of pounds.
