Towards the northern end of the Ashbourne - Buxton line, the railway made its way through some tough terrain. It was blasted by black powder in places but most of the work was done by hand - pickaxes, shovels and wheel barrows were the main tools of the time. You can appreciate the work involved in creating the railway as you cycle through these cuttings, but nature is quick to reclaim its land too as along the rock face trees begin to grow again.
