Kirkwall.
A succession of invaders and migrants have come to Kirkwall, early farmers from Europe, Pictish settlers, Viking seafarers, and Scots from just over the Pentland Firth. Now tanker drivers and workers from an oil terminal are the latest invaders and developer of Orkney's economy.
Kirkwall's narrow flagstoned main street is similar to that of Orkney's other major town, Stromness, where the ancient narrow streets are hemmed in by tall 17th century buildings.
