Norham Castle was once one of the strongest fortresses in this border area of many such strongholds, and today still retains much of its original Norman keep. The rapid, savage clashes between England and Scotland have meant the building of many castles - there are seven major fortresses in this area alone and Norham is the first on this southerly section of the route.
