The southern section of the National Scottish Cycle Route (Lochs & Glens route) takes you from Glasgow to Carlisle, and Glasgow's Bell's Bridge is the starting point. Surrounded by the rounded architecture of Glasgow's more recent buildings, the Bridge is quietly watched over by the giant structure of the 250ft Clydeport Finnieston hammerhead crane built to lift locomotives onto ships at a time when Glasgow's five locomotive builders were supplying over 70% of the world's steam locomotives. It stands empty and alone now but its strength and size still evident, and a reminder of Glasgow's past. But the city's image has changed, and the new buildings around Bell's Bridge contrast well with the more worldly Clydeport Crane.
