Okehampton Castle

The castle was probably built after 1068 and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It's thought that the castle once served as an important administrative centre -  it's situated right in the centre of Devon - and although fortified it's thought that it was never actually beseiged. Perhaps never attacked, it was still deliberately placed in such a position that attack would be more difficult with steep slopes, a stream and boggy ground surrounding it, making it that more difficult capture. It was used as a hunting retreat for the wealthy Earls of Devon and is the oldest and largest castle in Devon.
