Causeway crossing to Holy Island.
The Island was originally called Lindisfarne after the stream which flows into the waters but became known as Holy Island around about the 11th century in honour of the legacy of St Cuthbert and the monks on the island. The causeway is covered twice a day by the sea and the refuge box is used on a fairly regular basis. The safe crossing times are timetabled at each end of the causeway but people sometimes still underestimate the sea and the quick water channels around the island.
