History of the line: The railtrail is along part of the former Selby to Market Weighton line built by George Hudson's company, the York and North Midland Company in 1848. It was taken over by the North Eastern Railway Company on 31 July 1854, and converted to double track in 1890 when the Market Weighton to Driffield section opened.

This enabled the carrying of the holiday trade from the towns of the West Midlands and South Yorkshire to the seaside resorts of Bridlington, Filey, Scarborough and Whitby. Low passenger receipts from the intermediate stations resulted in stations at Bubwith, Highfield, Foggathorpe, Holme and Everingham closing on 5 December 1953. Excursion traffic still used it but on May 1963, Dr Beeching took an interest in it and decided to close it. The last regular service ran on 12 June 1965 and the line finally closed on 14 June 1965.

'East Riding County Council later bought it for a new road scheme. Luckily, this was abandoned but the line was kept as a recreational route. Improvements were undertaken by Humberside County Council and further works are planned. Today it's a pleasant recreational asset for walkers, cyclists and horseriders to enjoy, and a wildlife habitat for birds, butterflies and insects to enjoy in peace.'
