Cycling in Dumfries & Galloway
13 - 45 miles

Booklet with 25 short cycle routes, maps and detailed route directions.

'The landscape of Dumfries & Galloway is largely undeveloped with many peculiar natural features such as the Devil's Beef Tub, a deep depression at the head of the Annan Water so named because cattle raiders used it to conceal the results of their work!

'A visit to Keir Mill in Upper Nithsdale is a must for keen cyclists. The sleepy hamlet of Keir Mill was home to, and the final resting place for Kirkpatrick Macmillan, inventor of the first pedal cycle. Courthill Smithy, where Kirkpatrick Macmillan created the pedal cycle is located approximately 100 metres north of Keir Mill.

'Cycling enthusiasts and other visitors to the region should not miss Drumlanrig Castle and Country Park. The Castle is open to the public during the high season and houses a cycle museum. You can also cycle round way marked trails through the grounds of the Castle.

'Cyclists exploring Galloway have discovered a land of colour; the purple heather, yellow whins and forty shades of green. Traveling over rolling hills and through mysterious glens, you can view red deer and wild goats and watch buzzards soaring above in the open skies. Britain's largest forest park - the Galloway Forest Park is located to the north west of the region. Covering 76,000 hectares of moorlands and lochs, the forest offers cyclists an opportunity to cycle off-road through a mixture of wildlife habitats. One option is is to take the Queen's Way between Newton Stewart and New Galloway or head into Loch Trool where there stunning views over Loch Trool from Bruce's Stone. Consult routes 20 and 21 for more details about these routes.'
