'The full
Purbeck Cycleway is long and a real challenge! It starts and finishes
in Wareham
taking in many of Purbeck's finest
landscapes and several steep climbs. This leaflet describes the features
of interest and wildlife that may be seen on the full cycleway.
Suggested detours are also shown on the map.
Frome
Valley Route
(22 miles)
'If
you would rather do a shorter, less strenuous cycle ride, or have less
time available, you may prefer to try the Frome Valley Loop which follows the valley of the River
Frome.
The
old part of Wool is very attractive. Stop for a while in Spring Street
to look at the old thatched cottages along the stream. Just outside Wool
is Woolbridge Manor, on the banks of the River Frome, where Tess spent
her honeymoon in Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbevilles". The
route crosses the railway at Wool and continues through
East Burton
before passing Moreton House on the
approach to Moreton village. Pause to visit the grave of Lawrence of
Arabia and Laurence Whistler's beautifully engraved windows in the
church. At Moreton the Frome Valley Route
links up with the full
cycleway.
Heath
& Ridge Route (12 miles)
'This
route goes via Ridge, Corfe
Castle
and Church Knowle and uses part of
the "Ranges Closed" route. It involves one steep climb at
Steeple Hill. The
Purbeck cycleway can also be joined via the Sandbanks Ferry where it links
in to the Isle of Purbeck Loop.
Isle of Purbeck
Loop (12 miles)
'This
hilly route can also be cycled from Swanage. It
passes through Langton Matravers, Kingston
and Corfe
Castle
with scenic views over the Corfe
Valley.'
