'
This safe, traffic-free trail is suitable for everyone. Its level surfaced path is ideal for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Longdendale's water used to power cotton and paper mills. Today, nearly a quarter of Greater Manchester's water comes from here.

'Discover the rich railway heritage of this historic valley. The Woodhead Tunnels now carry electricity via power cables, but once they were a wonder of the great railway age. Over 3 miles long, at least 60 workers died building them. You can visit some of their graves at the tiny Woodhead Chapel.

'Why not walk a short section of the Trail and return along one of the paths around the 5 reservoirs or cycle the whole 6 mile route from Hadfield Station to the Woodhead Tunnels.

'Although the route starts near Hadfield Station, you can access it at the various points marked on the map.'
