The
Great Flat Lode Trail Foldout leaflet and map of the Trail including information on it's history - copper and tin, wildlife and mine sites. 'This
circular trail explores one of the
greatest concentrations of historic mine buildings anywhere in the world. 'On the southern section are the best preserved engine houses and mine sites, many with sweeping views to Carn Brea and beyond to the north coast. They date from a mid 19th century tin mining boom, and their good state of repair is due to their late working, and recent conservation works. Although tranquil today, imagine how different the scene would have been 120 years ago with thousands of miners toiling underground, and the continuous noise from the heavy stamps crushing the ore. 'The Trail makes a circuit around the base of Carn Brea, amongst farmland and heathland. Even on the northern section the immediate surroundings are mostly rural. For cyclists the route is part of the Cornish Way.'
