Inverness - Carlisle
Moderate - Challenging
After a short, easy section to Culloden, there's a
steady climb towards the open moors of Strath Dearne.
Without losing too much height, the route follows Strath
Spey with the Cairngorms to the east. Drumochter
Pass is the difficult part but after that this far northern section gives some respite. There's a dip into Aberfoyle
and it's pretty easy going through Glasgow
and on to Ayr. The southern leg of the
route heads through Galloway Forest Park
which presents a few climbs but it's worth it - and the Sustrans map
gives a choice of route there too. The final section hugs the Solway
Firth and a very easy, flat end to the route.
