Day 1

A day in Buffalo, New York: Tour of Niagara River

27 miles

I have been planning for this trip for almost a year. The journey started in Elyria where I loaded myself and my bike on an Amtrak train and went to Buffalo. Then I rode my bike home, camping along the way.

I got on the train at 2:38 am in Elyria, and arrived at the Buffalo station at about 7:15. Arriving in Buffalo, I thought the train would never stop at the station. But it did, and it took me about 15 minutes then to set up my rig. I was eating breakfast at Alton's on Walden Street in Buffalo by 7:45.

I arrived at Best Western Hotel on Delaware Street at 9:00, tired from lack of sleep. I asked the clerk what time I could check in, and she said 2:00. Then I asked if I could leave a piece of luggage at the hotel, since I had a reservation and was going to check in later. So she changed her mind and let me check in immediately. I took advantage of that by sleeping for three hours.

Next I went out to ride across the Peace Bridge. Originally, I had planned to ride up to Niagara Falls on Sunday. But I changed my mind; it was just too rainy and cold. So I just went for a tour of the Niagara River. As I was riding up Porter Avenue toward the bridge, I noticed a big parade up ahead. "Wow" I thought, "they didn't have to have a parade just because I came to town!" But as I got closer, I saw a banner in the parade that read "Gay Pride Day". I guess the parade wasn't being held in my honor after all.

All in all, I had a very nice ride along the Niagara River in Canada. Afterward, I took a shower and went in search of food. I had an absolutely delicious meal of Broccoli Pasta at the TOWNE Restaurant.
